My car is broken

I just received word from the mechanic that the transmission system in my car “blew up.”  Maybe it just wore out after 220,000 miles.  I was always proud of how many miles I put on that car and wanted to see how far I could push it.  The mechanic said it will cost more than $1,000 to fix it and I wonder if it is worth it to put that much money into a nearly 20 year old car.  The end result is that now, my bike is my only means of transport, unless I want my wife to drive me everywhere.  Maybe this will force me to do that winter commute that I have been dreading for so long?

  1. That is impressive! I was raised to get rid of a car before it hits 100,000 miles. You know, trade it up. Lately I've been thinking I will hang onto my current vehicle for as long as possible. Not having a car payment sounds amazing. Reading you reached over 200,000 is very inspiring! Thanks so much for your blog post.

  2. That's interesting. So, it sounds like you were taught to trade in a car and get a new one before it loses too much value. I was raised on that old pioneer saying “Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.” I guess both philosophies have their up and down sides.
